Fremont County Citizen Science Project
The Fremont County Citizen Science Project is a growing community-driven initiative focused on documenting and better understanding the biodiversity of Fremont County, Colorado.
During the Spring 2026 student pilot, participating classes from Cañon City and Florence used the iNaturalist app to record plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms—creating a real, public dataset of local biodiversity while connecting students directly to the land around them.
With the pilot now complete, the project is opening to the broader community to continue growing the dataset year-round while laying the foundation for expanded student participation during the 2026–2027 school year.
Project Goals
-
Engage students and community members in hands-on outdoor science
-
Build awareness of local ecosystems and biodiversity
-
Create a growing public dataset of Fremont County plants, animals, and fungi
-
Encourage stewardship through observation and connection
-
Expand participation across additional classrooms and schools over time
Who Can Participate
The Spring 2026 pilot focused primarily on students in grades 7–12 through participating classrooms in Cañon City and Florence.
The project is now open to additional community participation while Adventure Acres Foundation explores expanded classroom involvement for the 2026–2027 school year and beyond.
No prior experience is needed.

🌎 Growing the Project
Following a successful Spring 2026 pilot, Adventure Acres Foundation is already exploring opportunities to expand the Fremont County Citizen Science Project into additional classrooms and schools during the 2026–2027 school year.
Future goals include:
- More participating classrooms
- Additional schools across the region
- Long-term biodiversity tracking
- Expanded community participation
- Potential future regional projects beyond Fremont County
Funding for this project supports student participation, classroom engagement, project coordination, recognition materials, and future expansion efforts.
Continued donations help Adventure Acres Foundation grow the project into additional classrooms, schools, and potentially neighboring communities in future school years.
